SJMA is the only West Coast venue for the latest global overview of design today, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s contemporary design triennial, traveling for the first time. Projects range from experimental prototypes and interactive games to fashion and architectural structures made feasible by material innovations. “Beauty” will feature 200+ works by 63 international designers, including Theseus Chan (Singapore), Maiko Takedo (Japan), Hans Tan (Singapore), Trace Architecture Office (China), Kyuya Shim (So. Korea), Sou Fujimoto Architects (Japan), Naomi Yasuda (Japan), Yeongkyu Yoo (So. Korea), & Jean Yu (So. Korea).

SJMA's commitment to present South Asian art has included exhibitions such as "Jitish Kallat: Epilogue" and "Postdate: Photography and Inherited History in India." The ongoing exhibition series “New Stories from the Edge of Asia” most recently presented the first major US museum exhibition devoted to the work of Japanese artist Tabaimo.
